Course Requirements for a Real Estate Broker License

Question: What are the course requirements for the broker examination?

Answer: An applicant for the broker examination must have completed eight (8) college-level courses, in addition to the experience/educational requirements.


Question: Which courses are required to take the real estate broker exam?

Answer: Of the 8 courses that a broker applicant must take, 5 are required and the balance of the other 3 are considered "elective" courses. The 5 required courses that the applicant must successfully complete are:

- Real Estate Practice - Legal Aspects of Real Estate
- Real Estate Finance - Real Estate Appraisal
- Real Estate Economics* - Accounting*
* of Real Estate Economics and Accounting, only ONE of the two are required.

The other three courses (electives) can be the advanced versions of the foregoing or other real estate courses including:
- Real Estate Principles - Business Law
- Property Management - Real Estate Office Administration
- Mortgage Loan Brokering - Escrows
- Computer Applications in Real Estate  



Question: What is the experience requirement(s) to qualify for a real estate broker license?

Answer:A broker applicant must have two (2) years full-time experience as a licensed real estate salesperson within a five year period immediately preceding the application date. This requirement may also be satisfied if the applicant submits evidence of graduation from an accredited four-year college or university, or of equivalent experience or education. For further information, including examples of acceptable types of equivalent experience, and the forms that will be required, the broker applicant should contact the Department of Real Estate directly..


Question: What are the standards for acceptable college-level courses?

Answer: Each college-level course required to qualify for the broker exam must:

1.) Be either a three-semester unit or four-quarter unit course.

2.) Have been taken at either:

- An institution of higher learning accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges or by a comparable regional accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Office of Education, OR-

- A private real estate school which has had its courses approved by the California Real Estate Commissioner as "statutory courses."
